This is a Latin abbreviation. It stands for Anno Domini in Latin, which means: in the year of Our Lord (after Jesus' birth). It is the traditional Christian form of common era.

The words anno Domini are sometimes used as a noun phrase to mean 'the passing of the years' or 'advancing old age', as in such sentences as 'I think that with anno Domini I have become less intolerant of those who disagree with me' and 'Anno Domini has meant that he's no longer the fine tennis player he once was'. However, this use of the expression is appropriate only in informal contexts.
