The APA system of academic referencing is a precisely detailed form of the author-date system laid down by the APA. This stands for 'American Psychological Association'. The APA system is the standard for all journals and books published by the Association, and is the standard set by, among others, the Psychology Department of the University of Hull - it is the standard of the whole profession. Its general form is that common in all forms of the author-date system. For detail, see the APA Publication Manual, particularly sections 94 - 103 of Chapter 3 ("Reference Citations in Text" - what AWE calls the 'text tag') and Chapter 4 ("Reference List").
