Advocate (pronunciation)

There is a small difference in the pronunciation of the noun 'an advocate' and the verb 'to advocate'.

  • The final two syllables of the noun have as shwa as vowels, 'AD-vek-et', IPA: /ˈæd və kət/.
  • In the verb, the final vowel is rather more stressed, and is more clearly formed like that in 'late' and most verbs ending in '-ate', like 'estimate', 'calculate' etc: 'AD-vek-ate', IPA: /ˈæd və ˌkeɪt/.
