Note that different speakers of English pronounce the word because' in several different ways. Native speakers, even those whose accent is best described as RP, may realize it as

  • 'bi-CAWS' (IPA: /bɪ ˈkɔːz/)
  • 'bi-CUZZ' (IPA: /bɪ ˈkʌz/) - sometimes abbreviated in speech, or written in representations of speech, as "'cuz'"
  • 'bi-COZZ' (IPA: /bɪ ˈkɒz/) - sometimes abbreviated in speech, or written in representations of speech, as "'cos'"

All pronunciations may be written in attempts to represent the spoken word as 'cause.

Etymological note: the word was originally (in Middle English) a phrase, 'by cause [that]', ~ 'for the reason [that]'.
