Whatever the difficulties that sometimes arise with the words used in the UK for some meals, everyone can agree that the morning meal - the first meal of the day, taken between getting up and going to work for most of us - is called breakfast.

Etymological note: breakfast is the food that 'breaks' the 'fast' (of not eating) of the previous night. The pronunciation of the first vowel, in RP, resembles that of 'get' (IPA: /ˈbrek fəst/); although some dialects realize it in the same way as 'break' IPA: /ˈbreɪk ˌfə (or ɑː)st/
