The verb 'to canonise' means to declare [someone] officially recognised as a saint, by the (Roman Catholic) Christian church. More formally, OED defines it as "To place in the canon or calendar of the saints, according to the rules and with the ceremonies observed by the Church". See also Canon (religious).

  • Canonise (or, preferably, canonize (see -ise - -ize)) has not until now meant 'to declare [a book, etc] to belong to the canon - either the biblical or a literary canon'. This usage is beginning to creep in. Academic writers are advised to resist it. See also Canon (religious).
