Cardinal and ordinal

These are the names that grammarians give to the two commonest types of number in use in ordinary language.

  • Cardinal numbers are the usual numbers. These are what the child learns first. They are the numbers used to count – ‘one, two, three’ etc.
  • Ordinal numbers are the derivatives of the cardinal numbers used to put things in order – ‘first, second, third’ etc.
