AWE has two separate articles covering the language spoken in England (and southern Scotland) from the invasion by various Germanic tribes of Angles, Saxons and Jutes until shortly after the Norman Conquest:
- Old English (History), which gives a brief account of how the language came into existence; and
- Old English (characteristics), which gives the briefest sketch of the ways in whgich the structure of the language differs from Present-day English
