This category contains verbs belonging to the class of Irregular verbs identified in Quirk 1985 as Class 6. It is identified as having the following characteristics:

  • No suffix is used to show the past tense or participle.
  • The forms of the past tense and past participle are identical.
  • The vowel of the base formis different from that of the past forms. Quirk further sub-divides Class 6 into ten sub-classes on the basis of their vowels.
    • 6 A contains verbs which have 'mainly' the sound '-ee-' in the base form and '-e-' in the past, like 'meet ~ met', IPA: /iː ~ ɛ/. There are 8 verbs in this sub-class, with some derivatives.
    • 6 B contains verbs which have 'mainly' the sound of the vowel in 'it' and 'is' in the base form and that of 'up' and 'cup' in the past (IPA: /ɪ ~ ʌ/) - (14 verbs). **The four verbs in 6 C have 'EYE' in the base form, and 'OW' in the past (IPA: /aɪ ~ aʊ/.
    • The two verbs in 6 D, 'light' and 'slide', move from IPA: /aɪ ~ ɪ/.
    • The two verbs in 6 E, 'sit' and 'spit', move from the sound of the vowel in 'it' and 'is' in the base form to that of 'cat' and 'that' in the past (IPA: /ɪ ~ æ/).
    • 6 F contains four verbs, with different vowels in the base form, which all have the vowel of 'got' (IPA: /ɒ/) in the past.
