7 A is the sub-class of Quirk's category 7 (past tense and past participle are different; neither has a suffix; vowel changes) in which the vowel changes in all three forms from '-i-' to '-a-' to '-u-', IPA: /ɪ - æ - ʌ/, as in swim ~ swam ~swum.

Quirk notes that although the three vowels given here are "generally accepted as standard", past tense forms with IPA: /ÊŒ/ are commonly used (especially in American English) and accepted IPA: /ɪ ~ ʌ ~ ʌ/), as in swim ~ swum ~ swum. There is another variant, with "some currency", with the past participle in IPA: /æ/, as in swim ~swam ~ swam. Avoid both of these in academic writing in Britain.
