Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 in Portsmouth and is best known for his contribution to classical English literature. His writing first started as articles and short stories for magazines and papers under the pen name of "Boz" before he was commissioned by a publisher and began to write longer stories. Dickens is considered to be one of the English language's greatest writers and his works have never been out of print, due to their popularity. Amongst his better known works are "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby", "A Christmas Carol", "David Copperfield", "Great Expectations" and "Oliver Twist". Many of Dickens' works are still taught in schools, colleges and universities across the UK and several have been made into films.
