The surname Cockcroft, most notably used by the Nobel Prize winning physicist Sir John Cockcroft (1897–1967), was pronounced by him as appears natural IPA: /ˈkɒk krɒft/, with both vowels like that in 'got' and 'not'.

  • An alternative pronunciation is recorded as /ˈkəʊ krɒft/, with the first vowel as in 'go' and 'know'. This may owe something to the euphemistic tendency noted under cock.
