Concinnity

The noun concinnity is derived from the Latin concinnus, meaning 'skilfully put together' or 'well-adjusted' (OED 2020). This rare word has the basic meaning of 'harmony' or 'consistency'. It can be used in various fields:

• In music, it means 'harmony', 'the state of being well tuned'.
  • Archaically, the related adjective concinnous was used in the phrase concinnous discord (or interval) to mean "a discord or dissonant interval which can be used in harmony" (OED 1891).
• In language, it means 'with good balance in construction', 'elegance', 'beauty of style'.
  • More particularly, concinnity is used for "A studied beauty or elegance" (ibid).
