Dot is a short form of the forename Dorothy. There are two main types of such shortenings: they are convenient for writing, e.g. in lists; or they are essentially spoken pet-names, and thus informal. (See Conventional abbreviations for forenames.)

The common noun 'dot' means a small mark - a point. It is commonly used to mean the full stop sign as used in URLs - for example, many web addresses end in 'dot com', i.e. .com.
