Flesh - fresh

Do not confuse the noun flesh with the adjective fresh.

  • The noun flesh means, in general, the soft tissues of animal bodies, particularly of mammals. It is also used of the soft parts of foods such as stone fruit ('the stone of a mango may be hard to cut clean from the flesh, but the flesh is worth it') and shellfish.
  • The general meaning of the adjective fresh is 'new' or 'recent'. Fresh food is that which has not been preserved (frozen, tinned, salted etc); vegetables that have just been harvested, fish that has just been caught, bread that has just been baked, etc. Hence it is used to mean 'not stale', 'not sour' and so on, and from this is applied to 'cool' temperatures and weather. Thence it is applied to tastes, appearances and so on.
