Govern - government

Notice that the noun formed from the verb 'to govern' when written correctly contains all the letters: government. This is true - even although few of us pronounce the first '-n-'. (The word is often pronounced in hurried speech as if it had only two syllables: 'gov-ment', IPA: /ˈgʌv mənt/), although it has three in careful speech - 'gov-earn-ment', IPA: /ˈgʌv ərn mənt/). Pedants and precisians also realize the '-r-', although this is unusual.

Government is one of the 117 mis-spellings listed as 'Common difficulties' in the section on 'Spelling' within 'Writing' in UEfAP.
