Maine is most commonly one of two places.

  • The state of Maine is one of the north-eastern United States which form New England. It gave its name to
    • several ships, notably the USS Maine, an armoured cruiser whose sinking in Havana as the result of an explosion led to the Spanish-American war of 1898, which removed Cuba, Guam, the Philippines and Puerto Rico from the Spanish Empire;
    • A book The Maine Woods, by Thoreau.
  • A former province of France, once the county of Maine. The territory now forms the departments of Mayenne and Sarthe, named for two rivers that flow into the River Maine, a tributary of the Loire. (It flows through Angers, the capital of the neighbouring county of Anjou, rather than through the county of Maine itself). There is also a department called Maine-et-Loire in the same region of Pays de la Loire.

Smaller places called Maine exist elsewhere. Maine can also be a forename or surname.
