This is a bibliography page, concerning a work to which reference is made elsewhere in this guide.

NED was the universally recognised abbreviation for the New English Dictionary of 1928, which was the 1st edition of what became the OED. You are now unlikely to see NED other than in older books, such as editions of literary texts produced in the 1930s. In your own work, use the modern versions - best of all, the 3rd (online) edition. If you can't use that, try to consult the 2nd edition in a library. If you are citing an older text which refers to it, of course, then you must cite the reference as [NED (1928), cited in...].
