The word nougat (a type of confectionery) has different pronunciations.

  • The traditional British RP version attempts to imitate the French: 'noo-gah'. There is a slight stress on the first syllable. (IPA: /ˈnuː gɑː/.) This is the majority pronunciation in the [[UK].
  • In some areas of Britain, it is commonly pronounced as a homophone of nugget, IPA: /ˈnʌ gə (or ɪ)t/. (A nugget is most usually a small lump, of something seen as valuable, such as gold and other metals; or, to advertisers, chicken. It was originally a person of compact build.)
  • In the United States, the usual pronunciation of nougat is 'NOO-get', IPA: /ˈnuː gət/, with the '-t-' realized.
