Parliament
From Hull AWE
Two mistakes can happen with this word.
- In spelling, some fail to realise that there are two letters in the middle syllable, and the order they come in: parliament.
- In pronunciation, some native English speakers try to pronounce both of those vowel letters, making a kind of four-syllable word, sometimes with a stress on the second '-a-'. Formal academic speakers always make it a three syllable word with the stress on the first syllable: 'PARL-y-ment', IPA: /'pɑː lə mənt/.
