The word prelate, which means 'an important figure in the Christian, or another, religion', is pronounced with the stress on the first syllable, whose vowel is like that of get: 'PRE-let', IPA: /'prɛ lət or 'prɛ lɪt/.

Etymological note: Prelate comes, through French, from the Church Latin praelātus, which means 'held in special esteem'. Praelātus is a passive participle of the Latin verb praeferre ('to carry in front', 'to display', 'to prefer'), the root of the English verb 'prefer'.
