Research (pronunciation)

Research, in traditional British academic (RP) pronunciation, has the stress on the second syllable: re-SEARCH, whether it is used as a noun ("I'm doing some research") or a verb ("I'm going to research an essay").

Speakers of American English will put the stress on the first syllable: REE-search. An English academic (a u-speaker, of a senior generation) has remarked "REEsearch is done on google; reSEARCH involves hard work and books." This may serve to point out why some academics may reject, or sneer at, online resources. (See also wikipedia.)
