A secondary school is the second stage of education for a child. In the UK, it usually starts at the age of 11 or 12. It continues till at least the age of 16 (the age after which education is no longer compulsory). Most students stay on into the sixth form. Secondary education facilitates the transition from primary education to work or to "higher" education (often university) which usually begins aged 18. Some professions accept entrants directly from school.
