The most universal dialect in English - and that encouraged by teachers - is known as Standard English, or SE for short. Academic English is SE on a formal level. Standard English is the dialect of most of the texts that students will read as part of a University course. It is the language of most parliamentary and other political debate. It is the dialect of what most people think of as 'BBC English', formally known as Received Pronunciation.
