Titbit

Titbit is the British English spelling of this word, which means 'a tasty morsel of food' but may also be used to refer to a pleasing bit of anything, e.g., 'a titbit of news', 'a titbit of gossip'. In American English, the spelling is tidbit. Editors of AWE find this somewhat mealy-mouthed - 'tit' is euphemistic British slang for [the adult female] breast - though the etymology of titbit is obscure, and it may be that tidbit is the earlier form, perhaps derived from a dialect word tid meaning 'tender'.
