The name of the West Yorkshire Pennine mill-town Todmorden, between Halifax and Rochdale, is pronounced with a primary stress on the first syllable. The other two syllables contain the indeterminate vowel the schwa, although LPD also recognizes a more precise '-o-' vowel like that in 'more' or 'for': 'TOD-mer-den' or 'TOD-more-den', IPA: /ˈtɒd mər (or mɔːr) dən/. The more precise vowel can lead some to stress the second syllable 'tod-MORE-den' / tɒd ˈmɔːr dən/ , which most locals regard as a serious error.
