Yoghurt - yoghourt - yogourt - yogurt - yaourt
From Hull AWE
The name of the semi-solid dairy product is now commonly written yogurt or yoghurt. It was commonly also yoghourt or yogourt, though these are less likely to be seen in the 21st century. The pronunciation is different in different varieties of English:
- in (British) RP, where the first vowel is like that in 'got' and 'odd' (IPA: /ˈjɒ gərt/); and
- in (American) GA, where the first vowel is like that in 'go' and 'so', /ˈjəʊ gɛrt/:
Both these normally stress the first syllable.
- The form yaourt, which is the normal French spelling of the transliteration from the Turkish original (pronounced 'yow-ort', IPA: /ˈjaʊ ɔːrt/), has also been used in English, with a pronunciation akin to the French (and the spelling): 'yah-oor(t)' /ja uːrt/. In this form, the central consonant is silent.
