:This is something of a curiosity - the first guide to broadcasters over how to pronounce words about whose mispronunciation listeners had commented. James, a distinguished phonetician, was "the first head of the department of phonetics set up by the School of Oriental Studies in the University of London" and "(1926â€“40), honorary secretary of the corporation's advisory committee on spoken English, which considered and reported upon words and proper names of difficult or disputed pronunciation" (''[[DNB]]''). This is the first booklet that resulted.
