AS (Advanced Subsitiary) is the level attained in year 12 or the first year of sixth form in the English and Welsh system of school education. It was introduced in 2001. AS levels act as a precursor for A2 (or A levels as they were previously called) and represent the first year of non-compulsory education at the age of around 17. It is usual for four subjects to be taken at AS level and then only 3 of these to be continued to A level standard.

AS may also be an abbreviation for 'Anglo-Saxon', an outdated name for Old English. (For more, see Anglo-Saxon.
