In 1919, the then Poet Laureate Robert Bridges wrote, as the second "TRACT" of the Society for Pure English (London, OUP), a paper on 'English Homophones'. This forms the basis for a category:Bridges homophones in AWE. (This page is a work in progress. In time, each entry in the nine of Bridges's lists will have a separate article in AWE, which will be included in the Category:Bridges homophones, and its sub-categories - whereon the word itself will be removed from the lists here in this workspace.)
Bridges's paper contains
- I The Main List of Homophones;
- II a list of homophones all involving the two phonemes wh- and -w-. (See w - Wh for further information);
- III a (small) Group of Homophones caused by loss of trilled ) R (cf. [sc. Rhotic);
- IV a small number of the names of biological species, which are so rarely confused with other words that they are omitted from List I;
- V some examples caused by the addition of the suffix -er (but see also List VI);
- VI words excluded from List I for various reasons, "their homophony being rightly questioned by many speakers";
- VII "Homophones due only to an inflected form of a word" (these involve such forms as Comparisons of adjectives, &c.";
- VIII "'False homophones' [see p.4], doubtful doublets, &c."; and
- IX "The following words were not admitted into the main class chiefly on account of their unimportance".
