Broccoli is spelled thus (two '-c-'s and one '-l-') - not brocolli, nor broccili.
- Broccoli is the plural of the Italian word broccolo, 'cabbage-sprout' or 'cabbage-top'. This is a diminutive of brocco, a 'shoot', 'stalk'.
- There is much confusion about different vegetables called broccoli. All are members of the brassica genus, being cultivars of Brassica oleracea, a species which has been bred to make several food plants - including cabbage, cauliflower, kale, brussels sprouts and kohlrabi. The most common form of broccoli, that with a close-packed head of green florets, is sometimes called calabrese, which is the Italian for 'Calabrian', 'from Calabria', pronounced in Italian 'cal-a-BRAY-s-ay' (IPA: /kæ læ ˈbre se/, and in English best pronounced the same way. (English speakers may find it easier to replace the '-s-' with the voiced equivalent '-z-'.) Don't say 'CAL-a-brees', /
kæ læ ˈbriːz/.- There is also sprouting broccoli, which has a less dense head, and thinner stems. It comes in an ordinary variety and the more 'gourmet' form of purple sprouting broccoli.
