AWE hopes that this category will eventually contain the background to, and explanations of, some of the terms currently taught in Departments of English Literature. So far, it holds mostly explanations of the more ancient terms drawn from the classical languages which formed the foundation of the beginnings of the teaching of English Literature at the start of the twentieth century. (Before then, it was accepted that teaching of 'Literature' at universities meant Greek and Latin literature.)
