Check - cheque

The two spellings check and cheque can be used to mean the same thing. Here there are variations between American and British English. A piece of paper used to tell a bank to pay money to someone out of a bank account is spelled cheque in UK English. In American English, it is check.

At other times, the two spellings mean different things. Be careful to use the spelling that you mean in any given choice of the word. See further Check-British English.

An exception is the name of the country - the Czech Republic and its inhabitants, the Czechs etc. The words about this geographical area are always spelled this way without exception - except the results of error!
