Desultory is usually pronounced in Britain with the stress on the first syllable, and the other syllables said quickly - either 'DE-s(or z)el-te-ri', IPA: /'dɛ s(or z)əl tə rɪ/ (four syllables) or 'DE-s(or z)el-tri' IPA: /'dɛ s(or z)əl trɪ/ (three syllables).
