Eliot is a surname in English, also used in recent years as a forename. Different families have adopted different spellings, such as Elliot, Ellyott and Elyot: any one bearer of the name, however spelled, is likely to take offence if it is spelled in one of the other ways.

The name is famous in English Literature. It is important to distinguish between

  • George Eliot, pseudonym of a nineteenth century woman novelist, esayist and translator
  • T.S.Eliot, a twentieth century male poet and critic, born in the USA, lateer naturalized as a British citizen.

An earlier writer is

  • Sir Thomas Elyot (c. 1490–1546), author of The Boke named the Governour (1531), a humanist volume of political theory and the moral education of rulers.
