Gimson, A. C. (1962) An Introduction to the pronunciation of English, London, Edward Arnold.
Professor Gimson pronounced his surname with the "hard '-g-'" of get: 'GGIM-s'n', IPA: /ˈgɪm sən/. See further Gimson (pronunciation).
Alfred Gimson was the second great describer of the sounds of the English language after Daniel Jones, whose student, colleague and successor he successively was. Both were Professor of Phonetics (Jones from 1912 to 1949, Gimson from 1966 to 1983) and Head of the Department of Phonetics at University College, London (Jones 1912-49, Gimson 1971-83). Both also served as Secretary of the International Phonetics Association, Jones from 1928, Gimson directly succeeding him in 1949.
