- Kenyon, John S. and Knott, Thomas A. (1944) A Pronouncing Dictionary of American English, Merriam, Springfield, Mass. .
- Cited by Crystal (1995) as an "influential system" aiming to "provide a standard transcription for the vowels of the main dialects of American English." This system was simplified in the highly important textbook Fromkin & Rodman, which is the commonest basic source of transcribing English in the USA.
