The two homophones knew and new - both pronounced IPA: /nju:/ - should never be confused, though tired writers - and children learning to write - have been known to confuse them.
- Knew is the past tense and -ed participle of the verb 'to know', which means 'to have knowledge'. This is an irregular verb whose forms are given at know.
- New is an adjective, the opposite of 'old' (which does not start with k- either).
- See also know - no.
