The verb of utterance ‘to mention’ is very commonly used by students whose first language is not English. It is an item of vocabulary not to be trusted. The idioms of its use are treacherous.

Use ‘to say’ instead. It is simpler and says what you mean. Sometimes, I think, writers become bored with using the word ‘say’ over and over again. But it is the best.
