Muslim is now the best way to spell this word, which means a follower of the Islamic religion, founded by the Prophet Muhammad. (The words Muslim and Islam are essentially the same, 'Islam' being the noun of action and 'Muslim' the present participle of the Arabic verb ﺃﺳﻠﻢ (aslama), 'to submit oneself to the will of God' (OED).) In earlier times, this word has been spelled as 'Mooslim', 'Moslim', 'Moslem'.

"The form Muslim is now generally preferred, as being closer to the Arabic" (OED).

For a note on the pronunciation. see Muslim - muslin.
