Raison d'être is a French phrase. It means "reason for being".

One might say that educating students is the raison d'être of this guide - the whole cause of its existing.

Pronunciation note: Try to pronounce the phrase in the French way, with a nasal 'n' at the end of 'raison', and the sound of 'get' as the vowel in être, whose final '-e' is not silent. (IPA: /ɜtʁə/.)
