According to Hoyle is an idiomatic phrase in English. It means 'by the book', 'according to the recognized and authoritative rules'. It is now less common than previously: in the twentieth century it was used of any activities, but the original meaning was of card games, where Edmond [sic] Hoyle's (1672–1769) book was regarded as the court of appeal for all players of card games who disputed the rules.
