BSI (or B.S.I.) is the standard abbreviation for the British Standards Institution, the UK's National Standards Body from 1931 to 1989, ubnder Royal Charter. In 1989 it became the business BSI Group, one of whose 3 divisions remains BSI British Standards, which deals with standards and standards related services. Students of technical and business subjects should be aware of the various Standards that are laid down by the BSI.

The BSI, as it then was, "was the world's first" National Standards Body in the world. Its website ([[1]]) says that it "represents UK economic and social interests across all of the European and international standards organizations and through the development of business information solutions for British organizations of all sizes and sectors. BSI British Standards works with manufacturing and service industries, businesses, governments and consumers to facilitate the production of British, European and international standards." "There are over 27,000 current British standards and 1,700 new or revised British, European or international standards are produced by BSI British Standards each year", largely in the commercial and engineering fields.

AWE's interest is mostly in two publications: BSI 1629 and BSI 5605, which deal with referencing sources in publishing.
