- Boswell, James (1791) Life of Johnson
- This is a celebrated example of the art of biography. Boswell (1740-1795), who met Dr Johnson in 1763 and kept company with him in London, and on various tours, until his death in 1784, wrote an intimate account of the life of England's most famous 'man of letters' which was first published in 1791, and does not appear to have been out of print since.
- There are many modern editions, both complete and abridged. (The original was published in "two large quarto volumes" (DNB), and was commonly published in up to 7 volumes.
An abridged version is available on-line at Project Gutenberg, []
