Breakfast (pronunciation)

Whatever the difficulties that sometimes arise with the words used in the UK for some meals, everyone can agree that the morning meal - the first meal of the day, taken between getting up and going to work for most of us - is called breakfast.

Etymological note: breakfast is the food that 'breaks' the 'fast' (of not eating) of the previous night. (For more, see Fast (changing meaning).)

The pronunciation of the first vowel, in RP, resembles that of 'get' (IPA: /ˈbrek fəst/); although some dialects realize it in the same way as 'break' IPA: /ˈbreɪk ˌfə (or ɑː)st/
