Do not confuse cellulite with cellulitis. They look alike, but are only distantly related in meaning.

  • Cellulite is a term more used in cosmetic treatments that medicine. Indeed, "Doctors object to the term as inaccurate." (L. AVEDON Beautiful People's Beauty Bk. (1971), cited OED. ) It means a certain type of deposit of fat in the human body regarded as unattractive, although very common indeed in women. These deposits are said to induce an unpleasant appearance. OED defines cellulite as a "special lumpy form of fat supposed to occur in some women, esp. on the hips and thighs, sometimes producing a yellowish puckering of the skin."
  • Cellulitis is a much more recognised medical term. It is a disease or disorder of the skin, caused by infection through broken surface. It can be a serious matter, and is not a merely cosmetic condition. OED defines it as "Inflammation of the cellular or areolar tissue. (Syd. Soc. Lex.)"

Do not confuse these two terms, especially if you are working in medical areas.
