Genealogy

Genealogy, meaning 'the study of, research into and construction of, family histories', 'the tracing of pedigrees or family relationships', is pronounced as it is written, despite a growing tendency to say it (and sometimes write it) as if it ended in '-ology' (IPA: /ˌdʒiːn ɪ ˈɒl ədʒ ɪ/). Pronounce the third vowel like that in 'cat': IPA: /ˌdʒiːn ɪ ˈæl ə(or ɒ)dʒ ɪ/.

Etymological note: genealogy is derived from the Greek γενεά ('race' or 'generation'). This is also the source of gene, genetics. genus, genome etc.
