- Gove, P. B., editor-in-chief (1961), Merriam-Webster 3rd New International Dictionary, Springfield, Mass., G. & C. Merriam Co; London, G. Bell & Sons Ltd.
- This is "still the most recent unabridged dictionary from Merriam-Webster" (Lynch, 2009), and consequently the best description of the American version of English - although some teachers, and lawyers, continue to prefer the more prescriptive 2nd edition as laying down more clearly how words should be used, rather than how they are used. See also Webster's Dictionary.
- There is also an on-line version freely available (although some more sophisticated information is only available to those that pay a subscription) at http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary.
