The homograph Pauline – always with an initial capital letter – may be either an adjective or a noun.

As an adjective, Pauline - pronounced with the second syllable rhyming with ‘wine’, IPA: /’pɔ:laɪn/ - means: of or relating to Saint Paul, the first-century Christian apostle. Thus we may speak of the Pauline epistles (i.e., the letters written by St. Paul), the Pauline doctrine of salvation, or Pauline conversion.

As a noun, Pauline - pronounced with the second syllable rhyming with ‘keen’, IPA: /’pɔ:li:n/ – is an English Christian name or first name for females. It is the first name of e.g., the actresses Pauline Quirke, Pauline Collins, and Pauline McLynn, and of the Conservative MP for Mid Derbyshire, Pauline Latham.
