The abbreviation s.v. is for the Latin words sub voce (or verbo), and thus is best italicized. Literally, it means 'under the heading (or word)': it is used to give references to books which are arranged alphabetically, such as dictionaries: it refers to text which is in an article which is NOT the one about the topic mentioned, and therefore not easy to find.

In practice, it means 'You will find the information you are looking for about XXXX in the article on YYYY'.
